OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
EPISODE: PILOT

Costume design concepts for the pilot episode of OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH. Beginning with historical research, I created a mix of gritty reality and comedy by playing with scale and details such as real tattoos from the period that look goofy by today's standards, friendship bracelets some of the pirates made with each others' teeth, drawn-on scars that switch sides (a la Young Frankenstein),

OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH
EPISODE: THE BEST REVENGE IS DRESSING WELL

Costume design concepts for the fifth episode of OUR FLAG MEANS DEATH. The challenge for this project was to use animals as inspiration for each of the elaborate party costumes. Using texture, vibrant colors, scale, and elements such as sculpted wigs and macaroni fashion, I leaned further into the fantastical comedy aspects of the show to set an even starker contrast with the grittier everyday wear.

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH

Costume design concepts for an animated production of JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH that takes inspiration from textiles, stop motion, and the whimsy of Nancy Ekholm Burkert's original illustrations.

Also included is the green tailcoat for Old Green Grasshopper that I created as part of the final assignment for Whitman College's costume design class. For this assignment, we had to transform a plain black coat into one that resembles our illustrated design with the added challenge of using fabric paint. To achieve this, I cut out and sewed the shape of the tails, painted the jacket green, hand-sewed buttons onto the front, added a gold lining to the collar, sewed fabric scraps into a double layer of tails, and finished it with painted detailing.
